EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
doctor
Dr. Elvi Barcoma became interested in orthodontics as a teenager after seeing the positive impact it made on her brothers self-esteem. During a summer break while in college, she asked her own orthodontist in Virginia Beach if she could work at her practice in order to learn more about the profession. In a few short months , her passion for orthodontics grew stronger than ever, and she made the leap to pursue orthodontics as a career. She graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and then went on to attend the School of Dentistry at Virginia Commonwealth University where she received her Doctorate of Dental Surgery. While in dental school, Dr. Barcoma received the highest honor of being inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society. After dental school, she completed her orthodontic residency at the Medical College of Virginia where she earned her orthodontic certificate and Master of Science in Dentistry.
OUTSIDE THE OFFICE & IN THE COMMUNITY:
In her spare time, Dr. Barcoma enjoys painting, running , baking , crafting, traveling, and singing. She enjoys donating her time to many activities in the community. One of the most meaningful projects she's been a part of is the Virginia Mission of Mercy Project. It involves dental professionals and volunteers coming together to provide free dental care to underserved areas in the United States. Dr. Barcoma has also volunteered for the Miles for Smiles 5K Run, the Richmond Special Olympics and for the American Heart Association.

Being an orthodontics assistant is one of the most rewarding careers ever! As one of NVO's Record Technicians, I am able to track before pictures, where patients are barely smiling, to their final photos where they can't stop smiling! They are a changed person. Once the patient sees the final results of their orthodontic treatment, it is honestly one of the most joy-filled moments! They simply can’t stop smiling! I honestly just love being part of such a positive process! Who wouldn't love being able to witness that daily?

Being an Orthodontic Assistant is great because I love getting to know each patient I help treat. I love to hear their stories about school, sports, and work. I started working for Dr. Casagrande in January 2009 and have enjoyed learning all aspects of orthodontic care. I currently attend ECPI where I am receiving my Associate’s degree in Medical Assisting. I have also attended school for massage therapy. My hobbies are women's and co-ed softball, fishing, camping, and kayaking. I also enjoy coaching my niece's softball team.

As an Orthodontic Assistant, I want each patient to be as comfortable as possible when they’re in our office. I have been an orthodontic assistant and lab technician since 2001. As the lab technician here at NVO, I am responsible for the fabrication of all orthodontic appliances, including retainers. I am often able to get you your appliance in a day or two, which is much faster than most offices that have to send their lab work out! I am from Puerto Rico and love to go there yearly to visit family. I have a beautiful daughter, Arianna. I think of my team members as my second family. When I’m not at work, I love snow boarding, hiking, camping, playing softball, and spending time with friends.
